These words are used to show contrast or unexpected results.

Although + clause

Although it rained, we went to the beach. (Although + subject + verb)

• Although he was tired, he continued working.
• She passed the exam although she didn’t study much.

Despite / In spite of + noun/gerund

Despite the rain, we went to the beach. (Despite + noun / -ing form)

• Despite being tired, he continued working.
• In spite of his busy schedule, he found time for his family.

Difference

• Although is followed by a clause (subject + verb).
• Despite / In spite of are followed by a noun or gerund (-ing).
• They all mean the same thing but have different grammar.
