Although, Despite, In Spite Of
These words are used to show contrast or unexpected results.
Although + clause
Although it rained, we went to the beach. (Although + subject + verb)
- Although he was tired, he continued working.
- She passed the exam although she didn’t study much.
Despite / In spite of + noun/gerund
Despite the rain, we went to the beach. (Despite + noun / -ing form)
- Despite being tired, he continued working.
- In spite of his busy schedule, he found time for his family.
Difference
- Although is followed by a clause (subject + verb).
- Despite / In spite of are followed by a noun or gerund (-ing).
- They all mean the same thing but have different grammar.
