Prefixes and Suffixes

Prefixes and suffixes are added to root words to create new words with different meanings.

Common prefixes

• un-: opposite (happy → unhappy, kind → unkind)
• re-: again (write → rewrite, build → rebuild)
• dis-: opposite (agree → disagree, appear → disappear)
• im-/in-/il-/ir-: not (possible → impossible, legal → illegal)
• pre-: before (view → preview, pay → prepay)

Common suffixes

• -er/-or: person who does (teach → teacher, act → actor)
• -tion/-sion: noun (educate → education, decide → decision)
• -able/-ible: can be (read → readable, access → accessible)
• -ful: full of (beauty → beautiful, hope → hopeful)
• -less: without (home → homeless, care → careless)
• -ly: adverb (quick → quickly, careful → carefully)

Exercises

1. Add prefixes to make opposites: happy, appear, possible, legal.
2. Add suffixes to change the word type: teach, beauty, care, quick.
3. Identify the prefix/suffix in: unhappy, rewrite, teacher, beautiful.
