Making phone calls in English requires specific vocabulary and polite expressions.
Answering the phone
- Hello? / Good morning, this is… speaking.
- Who’s calling, please? / Can I help you?
Asking to speak to someone
- Could I speak to…? / Is… there?
- I’d like to speak to…, please.
Taking and leaving messages
- Can I take a message? / Would you like to leave a message?
- Please tell him/her that… / I’ll call back later.
- My number is… / Could you ask him to call me?
Common phone problems
- The line is busy. / I can’t hear you well.
- You’re breaking up. / Could you speak up, please?
- I’ll call you back. / Hang on a moment.
