English Language Skills for BAC Success
This lesson covers essential grammar and writing skills needed for the Algerian BAC exam in the Literature stream.
Passive Voice:
Form: Subject + be + past participle (+ by agent)
Use: When the action is more important than the doer.
Active: “Shakespeare wrote Hamlet.”
Passive: “Hamlet was written by Shakespeare.”
Tense changes in passive:
– Present Simple: is/am/are + past participle
– Past Simple: was/were + past participle
– Present Perfect: have/has been + past participle
– Future: will be + past participle
Relative Clauses:
Who for people
Which for things
That for people or things (in defining clauses)
Whose for possession
Where for places
When for times
Writing Skills:
For the BAC writing task, you should:
1. Plan your essay before writing.
2. Use linking words (however, therefore, moreover).
3. Write clear topic sentences.
4. Support your ideas with examples.
5. Check your grammar and spelling.
BAC Exercise:
Rewrite using passive: “The government will build a new hospital.”
Answer: “A new hospital will be built by the government.”
Combine using relative clause: “I met a woman. She works in Algeria.”
Answer: “I met a woman who works in Algeria.”
