Past Continuous Tense

Definition:
The Past Continuous (also called Past Progressive) describes an action that was in progress at a specific time in the past. It emphasizes the duration or ongoing nature of the action.
Formation:
Subject + was/were + verb-ing

Affirmative:
- I was studying when you called.
- They were playing football at 5 PM.
Negative:
Subject + was/were + not + verb-ing
- She was not (wasn’t) sleeping.
- We were not (weren’t) watching TV.
Interrogative:
Was/Were + subject + verb-ing?
- Were you listening to the teacher?
- Was he working on the project?
Uses of the Past Continuous:
1. An action in progress at a specific past time:
“At 8 o’clock last night, I was doing my homework.”
2. Two simultaneous actions in the past:
“While I was cooking, my brother was watching TV.”
3. An interrupted action (with Past Simple):
“I was walking to school when it started to rain.”
4. Background description in a story:
“The sun was shining, birds were singing, and people were walking in the park.”
Time Expressions used with Past Continuous:
- While / When: While I was reading, the phone rang.
- At + specific time: At 6 PM yesterday, I was having dinner.
- All day / All morning: He was studying all day.
- From … to …: They were playing from 3 to 5 PM.
Past Simple vs Past Continuous:
