الدرس: Countable and Uncountable Nouns — Grammar Rules and BAC-Style Exercises

Lesson Objectives:
- Distinguish between countable and uncountable nouns.
- Use quantifiers (some, any, much, many, a lot of, a few, a little) correctly.
- Apply rules in BAC-style exercises.
1. Countable Nouns
Definition: Nouns that can be counted. They have singular and plural forms.
Examples: a book → two books, an apple → three apples, a student → many students
Quantifiers used: a/an, one, two, three…, many, a few, few, several, a number of
2. Uncountable Nouns
Definition: Nouns that cannot be counted. They have only one form (singular).
Examples: water, milk, rice, sugar, information, advice, news, money, bread, weather
Quantifiers used: much, a little, little, a great deal of, some, any
3. Important Notes:
- Some is used in affirmative sentences and offers: “I need some water.” / “Would you like some tea?”
- Any is used in negative and interrogative sentences: “I don’t have any money.” / “Do you have any questions?”
- Many is used with countable nouns: “How many books do you have?”
- Much is used with uncountable nouns: “How much time do we have?”
- A lot of/lots of can be used with both: “a lot of people” / “a lot of water”
- A few (+ countable) = small number: “a few friends”
- A little (+ uncountable) = small amount: “a little sugar”
4. BAC-Style Exercises
Exercise 1: Fill in the blanks with some, any, much, many, a few, or a little:
a) I need ___ information about the exam.
b) How ___ students are there in your class?
c) She doesn’t have ___ friends in this city.
d) There is ___ milk in the fridge. You can take it.
e) He gave me ___ good advice.
Answers: a) some, b) many, c) many/any, d) some/a little, e) some/a lot of
Exercise 2: Correct the mistakes in the following sentences:
a) I have much books in my bag.
b) She needs a few informations about the trip.
c) There is many water in the bottle.
Answers:
a) I have many/a lot of books in my bag. (much → many because books is countable)
b) She needs a little/some information about the trip. (informations → information, a few → a little)
c) There is much/a lot of water in the bottle. (many → much because water is uncountable)
Exercise 3 (BAC): Rewrite the sentence using the word in brackets:
“There isn’t much sugar left.” (little) → ____________________________
Answer: There is little sugar left.
