Past Simple
Completed actions: I visited my grandmother yesterday. Sequence: He woke up, had breakfast, went to school. Signal words: yesterday, last week, ago.
Past Continuous
Actions in progress at a specific time: At 8pm I was watching TV. Interrupted actions: I was sleeping when the phone rang. Signal words: while, when.
Exercises
Complete: 1. I (watch) TV when the lights (go out). 2. They (play) football at 3pm yesterday.
