Present Simple vs Present Continuous

Learning Objectives

I. Present Simple

Form: Subject + base verb (+ s/es for he/she/it)

  • I/You/We/They work
  • He/She/It works

Uses:

  1. Habits and routines: I wake up at 7 am every day.
  2. General truths: Water boils at 100°C.
  3. Permanent situations: She lives in Algiers.
  4. Scheduled events: The train leaves at 6 pm.

Signal words: always, usually, often, sometimes, never, every day/week, generally

II. Present Continuous

Form: Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing

  • I am working
  • He/She/It is working
  • You/We/They are working

Uses:

  1. Actions happening now: She is reading a book right now.
  2. Temporary situations: He is staying with his uncle this week.
  3. Planned future: We are visiting Paris next summer.
  4. Trends and changes: The climate is getting warmer.

Signal words: now, right now, at the moment, today, this week/month, Look! Listen!

III. Key Differences

Present Simple Present Continuous
Permanent / habitual Temporary / happening now
I work in a bank. (permanent job) I am working from home this week. (temporary)
She speaks English. (ability) She is speaking to the manager now. (action now)

IV. Solved Exercises

Exercise 1: Complete with the correct tense.

a) She usually walks (walk) to school, but today she is taking (take) the bus.

b) Water freezes (freeze) at 0°C.

c) Listen! Someone is knocking (knock) on the door.

d) They play (play) football every Friday.

Exercise 2: Correct the mistakes.

a) He is going to the gym every day. → He goes to the gym every day.

b) I am knowing the answer. → I know the answer. (stative verb)

Summary

  • Present Simple → habits, facts, permanent situations
  • Present Continuous → actions in progress, temporary situations, future plans
  • Stative verbs (know, believe, love, hate) are not used in continuous forms
