Reported Statements

When reporting what someone said we usually change the tense. Present Simple to Past Simple. Present Continuous to Past Continuous. Present Perfect to Past Perfect. Past Simple to Past Perfect. Will to Would. Can to Could. Example: Direct: I am happy. Reported: He said that he was happy. Direct: I will come tomorrow. Reported: She said that she would come the next day.

Time and place changes

Now then. Today that day. Tomorrow the next day. Yesterday the day before. Here there. This that. These those.

Reported Questions

Wh-questions: Keep the wh-word change the tense and word order. Example: Where do you live? He asked where I lived. Yes/No questions: Use if/whether. Example: Do you like coffee? She asked if I liked coffee.

Exercises

Exercise 1: Change to reported speech: 1- I am studying English (she said). 2- Will you come to the party? (he asked me). 3- Where do you work? (they asked her).
