The Passive Voice
Formation
Subject + be (conjugated) + Past Participle V3 + by + agent. The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence.
Active vs Passive
Active: The cat ate the mouse. Passive: The mouse was eaten by the cat.
Passive in different tenses
Present Simple: is/are + V3 (The letter is written). Past Simple: was/were + V3 (The letter was written). Future Simple: will be + V3 (The letter will be written). Present Perfect: has/have been + V3 (The letter has been written). Past Perfect: had been + V3 (The letter had been written). Modal verbs: can be + V3 (The letter can be written).
When to use passive
1- When the agent is unknown: My car was stolen. 2- When the agent is obvious: He was arrested. 3- When we want to emphasize the action: The hospital was built in 2020.
Exercises
Exercise 1: Change to passive: 1- The students clean the classroom. 2- Shakespeare wrote Hamlet. 3- They will build a new school next year.
