Literature: The Short Story – Elements and Analysis

1. What is a Short Story?

A short story is a brief work of fiction that typically focuses on a single event, character, or theme. It is shorter than a novel but contains all the essential elements of fiction.

2. Elements of a Short Story

a. Plot:

The sequence of events in the story. Includes: exposition (introduction), rising action, climax, falling action, resolution.

b. Characters:

The people in the story. Can be protagonist (main character) or antagonist (opposing force).

c. Setting:

The time and place where the story occurs.

d. Conflict:

The central problem in the story. Can be internal (man vs. himself) or external (man vs. man, society, nature).

e. Theme:

The central idea or message of the story.

f. Point of View:

The perspective from which the story is told (first person, third person).

3. How to Analyze a Short Story

1. Read the story carefully.
2. Identify the plot structure.
3. Analyze the characters.
4. Determine the setting.
5. Identify the conflict and theme.
