The Past Simple vs Past Continuous
The Past Simple and Past Continuous are essential tenses for talking about the past. This lesson explains when to use each tense and how they work together.
Past Simple
Form: Subject + Past tense verb (regular -ed or irregular)
Uses:
- Completed actions: “I visited Paris last year.”
- Sequences of events: “She woke up, had breakfast, and went to work.”
- Past habits: “When I was young, I played football every day.”
Keywords: yesterday, last week/month/year, in 2010, ago, then, first, finally
Past Continuous
Form: Subject + was/were + verb-ing
Uses:
- Actions in progress at a specific past time: “I was studying at 8 PM last night.”
- Background actions: “The sun was shining and the birds were singing.”
- Interrupted actions: “I was watching TV when the phone rang.”
Keywords: while, when, as, at that moment, all day yesterday
Using Past Simple and Past Continuous Together
When one action interrupts another, we use Past Continuous for the longer action and Past Simple for the shorter action:
“I was reading a book when my friend arrived.”
“While she was cooking dinner, she cut her finger.”
