Present Continuous Tense

The Present Continuous Tense is used to describe actions happening now or around the present moment. It is formed with the verb “to be” + the present participle (-ing).

1. Formation

Affirmative: Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing. Example: I am studying. She is reading. They are playing.
Negative: Subject + am/is/are + not + verb-ing. Example: He is not (isn’t) sleeping.
Questions: Am/Is/Are + subject + verb-ing? Example: Are you listening?

2. Uses

Actions happening now: “Look! It is raining.” Temporary situations: “I am living in London this month.” Future arrangements: “We are meeting tomorrow.” Trends and changes: “The population is increasing.” Repeated actions with always: “He is always losing his keys.”

3. Spelling Rules for -ing

Most verbs: add -ing (play→playing). Verbs ending in -e: remove e + ing (make→making, write→writing). Verbs ending in CVC: double final consonant + ing (run→running, swim→swimming). Verbs ending in -ie: change to -y + ing (lie→lying, die→dying).

4. Non-Continuous Verbs

Some verbs are not used in continuous tenses: stative verbs like know, believe, understand, like, hate, want, need, prefer, belong, seem, own. Example: “I know the answer” (not “I am knowing”).

5. Examples

Example 1: “The children are playing in the garden.”
Example 2: “I am reading a very interesting book.”
Example 3: “She is not wearing a coat today.”
Example 4: “Are you coming to the party tonight?”
Example 5: “The baby is sleeping.”

1. Complete: She ___ (cook) dinner now. They ___ (not/watch) TV.
2. Make questions: He is reading a book. → ___?
3. Write sentences about what is happening in your classroom now.
