Past Simple vs Past Continuous
The Past Simple and Past Continuous are two commonly used past tenses in English. The Past Simple describes completed actions in the past, while the Past Continuous describes actions that were in progress at a specific time in the past. They are often used together to show an action interrupted by another action.
Past Simple
Form: Subject + past tense verb (regular: -ed, irregular: various forms).
Negative: Subject + did + not + base verb.
Question: Did + subject + base verb?
- Completed actions: “I visited Paris last year.”
- Sequence of events: “She woke up, had breakfast, and left for work.”
- Past habits: “When I was young, I played outside every day.”
- Signal words: yesterday, last week, ago, in 2010, then, first, then.
Past Continuous
Form: Subject + was/were + verb-ing.
Negative: Subject + was/were + not + verb-ing.
Question: Was/Were + subject + verb-ing?
- Actions in progress at a specific time: “I was studying at 8 PM last night.”
- Background action: “The sun was shining and the birds were singing.”
- Interrupted action: “I was watching TV when the phone rang.”
- Parallel actions: “While she was cooking, he was setting the table.”
Using Past Simple and Past Continuous Together
When a longer action (Past Continuous) is interrupted by a shorter action (Past Simple):
“I was reading (long action) when my friend arrived (short action).”
“While I was walking home, I saw an accident.”
