Adverbs of Manner

Adverbs of manner describe HOW an action is done. They usually end in -ly.

Formation

• Adjective + ly: quick > quickly, careful > carefully, slow > slowly
• Adjectives ending in y: happy > happily, easy > easily
• Adjectives ending in le: terrible > terribly
• Irregular: good > well, fast > fast, hard > hard

Position in a sentence

After the verb: “She speaks quietly.” / After the object: “He did the work carefully.”

Examples

• He drives slowly. (He is a slow driver.)
• She sings beautifully. (She has a beautiful voice.)
• They played well. (They are good players.)
• Please listen carefully. (Be careful when listening.)
