English Phrasal Verbs: Formation, Meaning and Use
Phrasal verbs are combinations of a verb + a preposition or adverb (particle) that create a new meaning. They are very common in English, especially in informal and spoken language. Understanding phrasal verbs is essential for achieving fluency in English.
What are Phrasal Verbs?
A phrasal verb consists of a base verb (come, go, take, put, get) and a particle (up, down, in, out, off, on, away). The meaning of the phrasal verb is often different from the meaning of the individual words. Example: give up means stop trying, not ‘give’ + ‘up’. Look after means take care of, not ‘look’ + ‘after’.
Types of Phrasal Verbs
Intransitive (no object): The verb and particle stay together. Examples: He woke up late. The car broke down. She grew up in Oran.
Transitive – Separable: The object can go between the verb and particle. Examples: Turn off the light OR Turn the light off. Pick up the book OR Pick the book up. Note: when the object is a pronoun, it MUST go between: Pick it up. (NOT pick up it).
Transitive – Inseparable: The object must come after the particle. Examples: Look after the children. (NOT look the children after). I ran into an old friend.
