Present Continuous Tense
Introduction
The Present Continuous tense is used to talk about actions that are happening now, at the moment of speaking.
Formation
Subject + verb ‘to be’ (am/is/are) + verb-ing
Affirmative:
– I am reading a book.
– She is watching TV.
– They are playing football.
Negative:
– I am not sleeping.
– He isn’t eating now.
– We aren’t listening.
Questions:
– Are you studying?
– Is she cooking dinner?
– What are they doing?
Spelling Rules for -ing
1. Most verbs: add -ing (play → playing)
2. Verbs ending in -e: remove the e (take → taking)
3. CVC pattern: double the last consonant (run → running)
4. Verbs ending in -ie: change to -ying (die → dying)
Uses
1. Actions happening now: Look! It is raining.
2. Temporary situations: I am staying with my aunt this week.
3. Future arrangements: We are meeting at 5pm.
