Articles in English: A, An, The
Introduction
Articles are small words that come before nouns. There are three articles in English: a, an, and the. They help specify whether we are talking about something general or specific.
1. The Indefinite Articles: A and An
We use a and an with singular countable nouns when we mention something for the first time or when it is not specific.
A is used before words that begin with a consonant sound:
– a book, a table, a university (sounds like “yoo”), a house
An is used before words that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u):
– an apple, an elephant, an hour (silent ‘h’), an umbrella
2. The Definite Article: The
We use the when we talk about something specific or when we mention something again.
Uses of “the”:
– When the noun is unique: the sun, the moon, the world
– When we talk about something already mentioned: I saw a dog. The dog was brown.
– With superlatives: the best, the tallest
– With ordinal numbers: the first, the second
– With geographical names (rivers, seas, mountain ranges): the Nile, the Mediterranean
3. Zero Article (No article)
We do not use an article with:
– Plural countable nouns used in a general sense: Dogs are loyal animals.
– Uncountable nouns used generally: Water is life., Knowledge is power.
– Proper nouns (names of people, countries, cities): Ahmed, Algeria, London
– Meals, sports, and subjects: I eat breakfast., I play football., I study English.
