Grammar: Countable and Uncountable Nouns (2nd Year MS)

Countable nouns

Countable nouns can be counted. They have singular and plural forms.
Examples: one apple, two apples, three books, four chairs

Uncountable nouns

Uncountable nouns cannot be counted. They have only one form.
Examples: water, milk, rice, bread, sugar, money, information

Quantifiers

• Countable: a, an, some, any, many, a few, a lot of
• Uncountable: some, any, much, a little, a lot of

Examples

• There are many students in the class. (countable)
• There is some milk in the glass. (uncountable)
• How much sugar do you need? (uncountable)
• How many eggs do you want? (countable)

Exercises

1. Classify: milk, apple, chair, water, book, sugar, egg, bread
2. Fill in: How … sugar? How … apples?
3. Correct: There are much water. / There is many books.
