The Simple Past: Regular and Irregular Verbs
The simple past expresses completed actions in the past. Regular verbs: add -ed (work/worked, play/played, study/studied). Irregular verbs: have specific past forms (go/went, see/saw, eat/ate, write/wrote, speak/spoke, take/took, buy/bought, teach/taught). Negative: subject + did not (didn t) + base verb. Ex: I didn t go to school yesterday. Question: Did + subject + base verb? Ex: Did you see the film? Time expressions: yesterday, last night/week/year, in 2020, two days ago, this morning. Spelling rules: verb ending in -e + d (like/liked), verb ending in consonant + y: change y to i + ed (study/studied), short verbs ending consonant-vowel-consonant: double consonant (stop/stopped).
