Articles: A, An, The
Articles are words that come before nouns. English has two types: definite (the) and indefinite (a/an).
1. A and An (Indefinite)
Used before singular countable nouns when mentioned for the first time. A before consonant sounds: a book, a house. An before vowel sounds: an apple, an hour.
2. The (Definite)
Used when the noun is known or previously mentioned. I saw a dog. The dog was brown. Also used with: unique things (the sun, the moon), superlatives (the best), ordinal numbers (the first).
3. No Article (Zero Article)
Used with: plural countable nouns (I like dogs), uncountable nouns generally (Water is important), proper nouns (Algeria), meals (I eat breakfast).
4. Exercises
Complete: I have _____ cat. _____ cat is black. She is _____ honest girl.
