The Past Continuous Tense: Formation, Usage and Practice — English — 2nd Year Secondary School — Algerian Curriculum

Lesson Objectives

  • Understand when and how to use the Past Continuous tense.
  • Differentiate between Past Simple and Past Continuous.
  • Form affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences in Past Continuous.
  • Use Past Continuous with while and when correctly.

1. Formation

The Past Continuous tense is formed using the past tense of the verb “to be” (was/were) + the present participle (verb-ing).

  • Affirmative: Subject + was/were + verb-ing
Example: I was reading a book. They were playing football.
  • Negative: Subject + was/were + not + verb-ing
Example: She was not (wasn’t) sleeping. We were not (weren’t) listening.
  • Interrogative: Was/Were + subject + verb-ing?
Example: Were you studying at 8 PM?

2. Uses of the Past Continuous

a) An action in progress at a specific time in the past

Example: “Yesterday at 7 PM, I was watching TV.” (The action started before 7 PM and continued after it.)

b) Two simultaneous past actions

Example: “While I was cooking, my brother was doing his homework.” (Both actions happened at the same time.)

c) An interrupted past action

Example: “I was taking a shower when the phone rang.” (The long action was interrupted by a short action.)

d) Background description in stories

Example: “The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and the children were playing in the park.”

3. Past Continuous vs Past Simple

Past Continuous (Long Action) Past Simple (Short Action)
I was reading a book. I read a book yesterday.
Focus on the duration/process. Focus on the completed action.
She was walking to school when… She walked to school yesterday.

4. Using “When” and “While”

  • When + past simple (short action interrupts): “I was sleeping when the alarm rang.”
  • While + past continuous (simultaneous): “While I was studying, my sister was listening to music.”
  • While + past continuous (during which): “The phone rang while I was taking a shower.”

5. Practice Exercises

Exercise 1: Put the verbs in brackets into the Past Continuous:
a) At 6 o’clock, I (do) __________ my homework.
b) They (play) __________ football when it started raining.
c) While she (read) __________, her brother (watch) __________ TV.

Exercise 2: Complete with Past Simple or Past Continuous:
a) I (walk) __________ to school when I (see) __________ an accident.
b) She (fall) __________ while she (run) __________ in the park.

Summary

The Past Continuous tense describes actions that were in progress at a specific time in the past. It is formed with was/were + verb-ing. It is often used with the Past Simple to show an action interrupted by another action. Use “while” for simultaneous actions and “when” for interrupting actions.
