Compound Nouns and Collective Nouns: Formation and Use
Compound nouns and collective nouns are important for building vocabulary and expressing ideas precisely in English.
Compound Nouns
Compound nouns are made of two or more words that function as a single noun. They can be written as one word, two words, or hyphenated.
- One word: bedroom, toothpaste, sunglasses, football, homework
- Two words: bus stop, police officer, credit card, swimming pool
- Hyphenated: mother-in-law, six-year-old, well-being
Common Combinations

- Adjective + Noun: blackboard, greenhouse, fast food
- Verb + Noun: washing machine, swimming pool, driving licence
- Noun + Verb: haircut, sunrise, rainfall
Collective Nouns
Collective nouns refer to a group of people, animals, or things as a single unit.
| Category | Collective Noun | Example |
|---|---|---|
| People | team, family, class, audience, crowd | The team is playing well. |
| Animals | flock (sheep/birds), herd (cows), pack (wolves), swarm (bees) | A flock of birds is flying south. |
| Things | bunch (flowers/keys), set (tools), collection (stamps) | She has a beautiful collection of stamps. |
Verb Agreement
In British English, collective nouns can be singular or plural depending on whether the group is seen as one unit (singular) or individuals (plural). In American English, they are usually singular.
