Prefixes and Suffixes: Word Formation
Knowing prefixes and suffixes helps you understand new words and expand your vocabulary. This lesson covers the most common affixes in English.
Common Prefixes

Word Formation Examples
- happy → unhappy (opposite) → happiness (noun) → happily (adverb)
- care → careful (adj) → carefully (adv) → careless (opposite adj) → carelessly (opposite adv)

- Add the correct prefix: “I ___agree with you.” “This is ___possible.”
- Add the correct suffix: “She is a teach___.” “He drives care___.”
- Use a dictionary to find 3 words with “re-” and 3 with “-tion”.
