📝 Introduction

Talking about the past is one of the most essential skills in English. Whether you’re telling a story, describing a historical event, or explaining the sequence of actions, you need to master the past tenses. In the Baccalaureate exam, past tenses appear in reading comprehension, grammar exercises, and writing tasks. This lesson covers the three main past tenses: Simple Past, Past Continuous, and Past Perfect, with detailed rules, examples, and practice exercises.

I. Simple Past — Past Simple

1. Formation

Type Rule Example
Regular verbs Verb + -ed work → worked, play → played
Irregular verbs 2nd column of irregular verbs go → went, eat → ate, write → wrote
Negative Subject + did not (didn’t) + base verb He did not (didn’t) come.
Question Did + subject + base verb? Did you see the film?

2. Uses

  • Completed actions in the past: I visited Paris last summer.
  • Past habits: He always walked to school when he was young.
  • Sequences of past events: She opened the door, entered the room, and sat down.
  • Specific time expressions: yesterday, last week, in 1999, two days ago, when I was a child.

II. Past Continuous — Past Progressive

1. Formation

Negative: Subject + was/were + not + verb-ing
Question: Was/Were + subject + verb-ing?

  • I was studying at 8 PM last night.
  • They were not (weren’t) playing football.
  • Were you sleeping when I called?

  • Two parallel actions: While I was cooking, he was reading.
  • Interrupted action (with Simple Past): I was taking a shower when the phone rang.
  • Background description in stories: The sun was shining, birds were singing.

III. Past Perfect — Pluperfect

1. Formation

Affirmative: Subject + had + past participle (3rd column)
Negative: Subject + had not (hadn’t) + past participle
Question: Had + subject + past participle?

  • She had finished her homework before dinner.
  • They had not (hadn’t) arrived when we left.
  • Had you ever visited London before that trip?

2. Uses

  • Past action that happened before another past action: When I arrived, the train had already left.
  • Cause and effect in the past: He was tired because he had not slept well.
  • With time expressions: by the time, before, after, already, never, yet.

IV. Comparison Table

Tense Form Use Example
Simple Past V-ed / V2 Completed past action I saw him yesterday.
Past Continuous was/were + V-ing Action in progress I was sleeping at 10 PM.

The Past Perfect describes actions that happened before another past action. The Past Perfect is often used with the Simple Past to show the order of events: the Past Perfect action happened first. Mastery of these three tenses is essential for the Baccalaureate English exam.
