Quantifiers: Some, Any, No, Many, Much, A Lot Of

Quantifiers are words that express quantity. They are used before nouns (countable and uncountable) to indicate how much or how many. Correct usage of quantifiers is essential for BAC English.

Quantifiers for Countable and Uncountable Nouns

  • Some (affirmative, countable/uncountable): I have some books. / I need some water.
  • Any (questions/negatives): Do you have any pens? / I dont have any money.
  • No (negative verb in affirmative form): There is no sugar left.
  • Many (countable, questions/negatives): How many students are there? / Not many people came.
  • Much (uncountable, questions/negatives): How much time do we have? / I dont have much patience.
  • A lot of / Lots of (affirmative, countable/uncountable): A lot of people attended. / Lots of work remains.
  • Few / A few (countable): Few students passed (not many). / A few students passed (some).
  • Little / A little (uncountable): Little progress was made. / Add a little salt.

Examples

Example 1: There are many schools in Algiers, but not much public transport in some areas.

Example 2: A few students got excellent marks in the BAC, while few students failed.

Example 3: I need a little help with my homework. Can you give me some advice?

Example 4: How much time do you spend studying every day? I spend a lot of time on English.

Exercises

  1. Complete with some, any, much, many: a) There isnt ___ milk in the fridge. b) How ___ children are in your class? c) I have ___ good news for you.
  2. Choose: a) I have (a few / a little) close friends. b) She has (a few / a little) experience in teaching.
  3. Correct the mistakes: a) There is many water. b) I dont have some money.

Summary

Use “some” in affirmative, “any” in questions/negatives. “Many” with countable, “much” with uncountable. “A lot of” works for both. “Few/little” = not enough, “a few/a little” = some.
