The Simple Present Tense

The simple present tense is used to describe habits, routines, general truths, and facts. It is one of the most important tenses in English.

Formation

• Affirmative: Subject + verb (add -s/-es for he/she/it). Ex: “I play football.” / “He plays football.”
• Negative: Subject + do/does not + verb. Ex: “I do not (don’t) like coffee.” / “She does not (doesn’t) eat meat.”
• Interrogative: Do/Does + subject + verb? Ex: “Do you speak English?” / “Does she live here?”

Uses of Simple Present

• Habits and routines: “I wake up at 7 every morning.”
• General truths: “The sun rises in the east.”
• Facts: “Water boils at 100°C.”
• Scheduled events: “The train leaves at 6 pm.”

Spelling rules for -s/-es

• Add -es to verbs ending in -s, -sh, -ch, -x, -o: watches, goes, fixes
• Change -y to -ies: study -> studies, carry -> carries

Exercises

1. Complete with the correct form: “She ___ (go) to school – They ___ (play) tennis – He ___ (study) hard”.
2. Make negative: “I like pizza – She reads books – They watch TV”.
3. Make questions: “You speak Arabic – He lives in Algiers”.
