Writing: How to Write a Persuasive Essay

Lesson Objectives:

• Understand the structure of a persuasive essay.
• Learn persuasive language techniques.
• Write a short persuasive essay.

What is a Persuasive Essay?

A persuasive essay tries to convince the reader to agree with your point of view. It uses arguments, examples, and persuasive language to support your opinion. The goal is to make the reader adopt your position or take action.

Structure:

1. Introduction: State your topic and your opinion clearly.
2. Body paragraphs: Present arguments with evidence and examples.
3. Conclusion: Summarize your arguments and restate your opinion.

Persuasive Language:

• I believe that…, In my opinion…, It is clear that…
• Firstly, Secondly, Moreover, Furthermore, In addition.
• For example, For instance, Such as.
• Therefore, Consequently, As a result.

Exercises:

1. Write a persuasive essay (100 words) on: “Why should students study English?”
2. Use at least 3 persuasive phrases and 2 arguments.
