Expressing Opinion, Agreement and Disagreement

Expressing your opinion, agreeing, and disagreeing politely are key skills for discussions and debates in English.

Expressing your opinion

• In my opinion, … “In my opinion, education is the key to success.”
• I think / I believe / I feel that… “I think that technology has changed our lives.”
• From my point of view, … “From my point of view, this is a good solution.”
• As far as I’m concerned, … “As far as I’m concerned, we should wait.”
• It seems to me that… “It seems to me that the situation is improving.”
• Personally, … “Personally, I prefer reading to watching TV.”
• To my mind, … “To my mind, this is the best option.”

Agreeing

• Strong agreement: “I completely agree.”, “Absolutely!”, “You’re absolutely right.”, “I couldn’t agree more.”
• Partial agreement: “I agree to some extent.”, “That’s partly true.”, “I see your point, but…”
• Neutral agreement: “I agree.”, “You’re right.”, “That’s true.”

Disagreeing politely

• I’m sorry, but I disagree. “I’m sorry, but I don’t think that’s correct.”
• I see things differently. “I see things differently. In my view…”
• That may be true, but… “That may be true, but we should consider other factors.”
• I’m afraid I don’t agree. “I’m afraid I don’t agree with that statement.”
• With all due respect, … “With all due respect, I think you’re mistaken.”

Example dialogue

A: “In my opinion, social media has more advantages than disadvantages.”
B: “I don’t entirely agree. While I think social media connects people, I believe it also causes isolation.”
A: “That’s a good point, but I still think the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.”
