Elements of Poetry
Meter Rhythm
Meter is the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. Types: iambic unstressed/stressed like today trochaic stressed/unstressed like happy anapestic two unstressed then stressed like understand.
Rhyme
Words that sound alike at the end of lines. Rhyme scheme: pattern of rhyming lines ABAB AABB etc. Example: The sun is bright A It gives us light A The birds do sing B It makes me sing B.
Imagery
Words that create mental pictures using the five senses. Visual: golden sun Auditory: whispering wind Tactile: rough stone Olfactory: sweet rose Gustatory: bitter taste.
Exercises
Exercise 1: Identify the rhyme scheme of a short poem. Exercise 2: Write a four-line poem with AABB rhyme scheme.
