Indefinite Articles (A/An)

• A + consonant sound: a book, a university, a car
• An + vowel sound: an apple, an hour, an honest man
• Used for first mention: I saw a dog. The dog was brown.

Definite Article (The)

• Specific or already mentioned: The book I read is good
• Unique things: the sun, the moon
• Superlatives: the best, the most beautiful
• Musical instruments: play the piano

Zero Article (No Article)

• Uncountable general: Water is essential
