English – Writing: The Argumentative Essay Structure and Techniques – 3rd Year Secondary Bac – Algerian Curriculum

Structure of an Argumentative Essay

1. Introduction (Paragraph 1)

• E – Explanation (explains your argument in more detail)
• E – Evidence (provides examples, facts, statistics, or quotes)
• L – Link (connects back to the thesis or leads to the next paragraph)

Example Body Paragraph :
“Firstly, smartphones can enhance learning through access to educational resources. With a smartphone, students can quickly look up information, watch educational videos, and use learning apps. For example, students studying biology can watch 3D animations of cell division, making complex concepts easier to understand. 3. Counterargument Paragraph (Optional but Recommended)

Address the opposing viewpoint and refute it. This shows that you have considered both sides.

Many schools have implemented ‘phone-free zones’ during lessons while allowing phone use during breaks for educational purposes. The solution is not a complete ban but rather smart regulation.“

4. Conclusion (Paragraph 4)

• Restate your thesis in different words.
• Summarize your main arguments.
• End with a final thought, call to action, or prediction.
