اللغة الإنجليزية — Grammar: Countable vs Uncountable Nouns (Quantifiers) — 1 ثانوي — شعبة آداب — بكالوريا — المنهاج الجزائري
In English, nouns can be classified as countable or uncountable. Understanding this distinction is essential for using correct grammar, especially with quantifiers like some, any, much, many, and a lot of.
I. Countable Nouns
Countable nouns are things that can be counted. They have both singular and plural forms.
Examples : book → books, apple → apples, student → students, chair → chairs, idea → ideas.
Singular : Use “a” or “an” before singular countable nouns. Example: “a book”, “an apple”.
Plural : Add “-s” or “-es” to form the plural. Example: “books”, “apples”, “watches”, “boxes”.
II. Uncountable Nouns
Uncountable nouns are things that cannot be counted individually. They are treated as singular and have no plural form.
Examples : water, rice, air, information, advice, furniture, music, money, bread, homework, news, luggage, traffic.
Note : Uncountable nouns cannot be used with “a/an” or numbers. We cannot say “a water” or “two informations”.
