Phrasal verbs are combinations of a verb + a preposition or adverb that create a meaning different from the original verb. They are very common in English. This lesson covers separable and inseparable phrasal verbs.
What are Phrasal Verbs?
A phrasal verb = verb + particle (preposition or adverb). The meaning is often idiomatic. Example: “give up” means “stop trying”, not “give” + “up”.
Separable Phrasal Verbs
The object can be placed between the verb and the particle OR after the particle. If the object is a pronoun, it MUST go between the verb and the particle.
Examples:
“Please turn off the light.” OR “Please turn the light off.”
“Please turn it off.” (pronoun MUST be in the middle, NOT “turn off it”)
Common separable verbs: turn on/off, put on/take off, pick up, drop off, throw away, fill in, give back.
Inseparable Phrasal Verbs
The object MUST come after the particle. The verb and particle cannot be separated.
Examples:
“I look after my grandmother.” (NOT “look my grandmother after”)
“She ran into an old friend.” (NOT “ran an old friend into”)
Common inseparable verbs: look after, run into, get along with, put up with, look for, wait for, come across.
Three-Word Phrasal Verbs
Some phrasal verbs have two particles. They are always inseparable. Example: “I put up with his behavior.” “She looks forward to the weekend.”
Common Phrasal Verbs for Baccalaureate
- Give up: stop trying. “Don’t give up!”
- Look up: search for information. “Look up the word in the dictionary.”
- Come up with: think of an idea. “He came up with a great plan.”
- Run out of: have no more. “We ran out of milk.”
- Get over: recover from. “She got over her illness.”
- Carry on: continue. “Carry on with your work.”
Exercises
- Complete with the correct particle: “Please _____ off your shoes before entering.”
- Rewrite using a pronoun: “Please turn off the lights.”
- Use 3 different phrasal verbs in sentences of your own.
