An Overview of English Literary Periods
English literature has a rich history spanning over a thousand years. Understanding the major literary periods helps you appreciate the works you study for the Baccalauréat exam.
Major Literary Periods
- Old English Period (450-1066): Epic poem “Beowulf”. Language is very different from modern English.
- Middle English Period (1066-1500): Geoffrey Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales”.
- The Renaissance (1500-1660): William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe. Golden age of drama.
- The Neoclassical Period (1660-1798): Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift. Emphasis on reason and order.
- The Romantic Period (1798-1837): William Wordsworth, Lord Byron, John Keats. Focus on emotion and nature.
- The Victorian Period (1837-1901): Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, the Brontë sisters. Social realism.
- Modern Period (1901-1945): James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot. Stream of consciousness.
- Postmodern Period (1945-present): George Orwell, Salman Rushdie. Experimental forms.
Shakespeare and the Renaissance
William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is the most famous English writer. He wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets. His major tragedies include “Hamlet”, “Macbeth”, “Romeo and Juliet”, and “Othello”. He invented many words and phrases still used today.

The Romantic Poets
- William Wordsworth: “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” (Daffodils). Nature poetry.
- Lord Byron: “She Walks in Beauty”. Romantic hero.
