Writing a formal letter is a common task in the baccalaureate English exam. It tests your ability to communicate in a structured, polite, and appropriate manner.
1. Structure of a Formal Letter
a) Sender’s Address
Write your address in the top right corner.
123 Main Street
Algiers, Algeria
b) Date
Below the address, write the date (e.g., “July 23, 2026”).
c) Receiver’s Address
On the left side, below the date.
d) Salutation
- If you know the name: “Dear Mr. Smith,” or “Dear Ms. Johnson,”
- If you don’t know the name: “Dear Sir/Madam,” or “To whom it may concern,”
e) Subject Line
A brief line indicating the purpose (optional but recommended).
f) Body
- Introduction: State your purpose clearly. Ex: “I am writing to apply for…”
- Details: Provide relevant information in 1-2 paragraphs.
- Conclusion: State what you expect. Ex: “I look forward to hearing from you.”
g) Closing
- If you used a name: “Yours sincerely,”
- If you used “Dear Sir/Madam”: “Yours faithfully,”
Sign your name below.

3. Sample Formal Letter
