Comparatives and superlatives are used to compare people, things, and actions. This lesson covers the rules and exceptions.
Formation of Comparatives
- Short adjectives (1 syllable): adjective + -er + than. Ex: tall → taller than. My brother is taller than me.
- Adjectives ending in -e: add -r. Ex: large → larger.
- Adjectives ending consonant + y: change y to i + -er. Ex: happy → happier.
- Long adjectives (2+ syllables): more + adjective + than. Ex: beautiful → more beautiful than.
Formation of Superlatives
- Short adjectives: the + adjective + -est. Ex: tall → the tallest. He is the tallest student.
- Long adjectives: the most + adjective. Ex: beautiful → the most beautiful.
Irregular Forms
- good → better (comparative) → the best (superlative)
- bad → worse → the worst
- far → farther/further → the farthest/furthest
- little → less → the least
- many/much → more → the most
Exceptions and Special Cases
- Two-syllable adjectives ending in -y, -ow, -le, -er take -er/-est: narrow → narrower, simple → simpler.
- Double the final consonant: big → bigger (CVC pattern).
- Use “than” after comparative: She is taller than her sister.
- Use “the” before superlative: She is the tallest.
Exercises
- Complete: This book is (interesting) ___ than that one.
- Irregular: My exam result is (good) ___ ___ (superlative).
- Correct: She is more taller than me.
