Writing: How to Write a Descriptive Essay
A descriptive essay creates a vivid picture of a person, place, object, or experience using sensory details. This lesson helps literary stream students master this important writing skill for the Baccalaureate.
Structure of a Descriptive Essay
- Introduction: Introduces the subject to be described and presents the overall impression.
- Body paragraphs: Describe specific details using sensory language (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste).
- Conclusion: Summarizes the description and leaves a lasting impression.
Sensory Details to Include
- Sight: colours, shapes, sizes, patterns
- Sound: loud, soft, melodic, harsh, whispers, echoes
- Smell: fresh, fragrant, musty, sweet, pungent
- Touch: smooth, rough, soft, hard, warm, cold
- Taste: sweet, sour, bitter, salty, savoury
Useful Vocabulary for Description
- Adjectives: magnificent, breathtaking, stunning, picturesque, charming, serene, vibrant, sparkling
- Verbs: glisten, shimmer, sparkle, echo, resonate, cascade, stretch, tower
- Adverbs: gracefully, gently, majestically, perfectly, beautifully
Example Descriptive Paragraph
“The old medina of Algiers is a maze of narrow, winding streets that tell stories of centuries past. The whitewashed houses cascade down the hillside, their blue doors and windows sparkling in the Mediterranean sun. The air is filled with the aroma of freshly baked bread, spices, and the salty sea breeze. Vendors call out their prices in melodic Arabic, while children’s laughter echoes through the alleyways. It is a place where history and modern life intertwine in the most enchanting way.”
