The Past Perfect Tense

The Past Perfect is used to talk about an action that was completed before another action in the past. It is often used in narrative texts and reported speech.

Formation

Subject + had + past participle (+ object/complement)

Examples

• When I arrived, the train had already left.
• She had finished her homework before she went out.
• They had never visited Paris before last year.
• He said he had already eaten.

Uses

• To show which action happened first in the past (past perfect = earlier action).
• In reported speech (backshift).
• In conditional sentences type 3: If + had + pp, would have + pp.
• With time expressions: already, just, never, ever, before, after, when.

Exercise

Complete with the past perfect: 1. When I got home, my mother (cook) _____ dinner. 2. She (never/see) _____ such a beautiful sunset before. 3. They (already/leave) _____ when we arrived. 4. After he (finish) _____ his work, he went home.
