English — Grammar: So do I / Neither do I (Agreement and Disagreement) — 2nd Year Middle School — Algerian Curriculum

Introduction

When we want to show that we agree or disagree with someone, we can use short responses like “So do I” or “Neither do I”. These are called short agreements.

Rules

Positive Statement	Agreement	Example
I like football.	So + auxiliary + I	So do I.
She is a student.	So + auxiliary + I	So am I.
They can swim.	So + auxiliary + I	So can I.

Negative Statement	Agreement	Example
I don’t like coffee.	Neither + auxiliary + I	Neither do I.
He isn’t tired.	Neither + auxiliary + I	Neither am I.
She can’t drive.	Neither + auxiliary + I	Neither can I.

Important Notes

• Use “So” for positive statements.
• Use “Neither” for negative statements.
• The auxiliary verb (do, does, did, am, is, are, can, must, etc.) must match the statement.
• The subject comes after the auxiliary.

Exercises

1. Respond to these statements: “I love reading.” / “I don’t eat meat.” / “She is from Algeria.” / “They don’t speak Spanish.”
2. Write 4 sentences using So do I and Neither do I.
3. Work with a partner: make statements and respond with So/Neither.
