Question Tags

Question tags are short questions added at the end of a sentence to confirm information or ask for agreement.

Formation

Positive statement + negative tag. Negative statement + positive tag.

• You are a student, aren t you?
• She isn t here, is she?
• They like football, don t they?
• He doesn t smoke, does he?

Special Cases

• I am late, aren t I?
• Let s go, shall we?
• Open the door, will you?
• Don t be late, will you?
• There is a book, isn t there?

Intonation

• Falling intonation: asking for confirmation (I already know).
• Rising intonation: asking for information (I am not sure).

Exercises

1. Add tags: You like coffee, __? She isn t coming, __?
2. Correct: He is a teacher, isn t he? (check).
