Writing: Writing a Cause and Effect Essay
This lesson covers how to write a cause and effect essay, an essential writing skill for third-year literary stream students preparing for the Algerian Baccalaureate exam.
Introduction
A cause and effect essay explores the reasons (causes) why something happens and the results (effects) that follow. This type of essay helps develop analytical and critical thinking skills, and is frequently required in the BAC exam.
Structure of a Cause and Effect Essay
- Introduction: Hook the reader, provide background, and state the thesis (main idea about causes or effects).
- Body paragraphs: Each paragraph discusses either a cause or an effect. Use topic sentences and supporting details.
- Conclusion: Summarise the main points and restate the thesis.
Useful Language
- To introduce causes: because, since, as, due to, owing to, the main reason is, one cause is, leads to, results in, contributes to
- To introduce effects: therefore, consequently, as a result, thus, hence, for this reason, the effect is, the consequence is
- To show connections: this led to, this caused, this resulted in, as a consequence
Sample Essay Plan
Topic: The Causes and Effects of Climate Change
- Introduction: Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, with far-reaching consequences for the planet.
- Body 1 (Causes): Greenhouse gas emissions from factories and vehicles, deforestation, and intensive agriculture.
- Body 2 (Effects): Rising global temperatures, melting ice caps, extreme weather events, and loss of biodiversity.
- Conclusion: Climate change requires urgent action from governments, businesses, and individuals.
Example Paragraph
One of the main causes of air pollution in urban areas is the increasing number of vehicles on the roads. Cars, buses, and motorcycles emit harmful gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide. As a result, air quality deteriorates, leading to serious health problems such as asthma and other respiratory diseases. Consequently, many cities are now implementing measures to reduce traffic and promote public transportation.
