Introduction to Linguistics

Linguistics is the scientific study of language. It is a core subject in university English Language and Literature programs. Linguists study language as a structured system and as a cognitive and social phenomenon. Understanding linguistics is essential for language teaching, translation, and communication studies.

Branches of Linguistics

• Phonetics: The study of speech sounds — how they are produced (articulatory), transmitted (acoustic), and perceived (auditory). The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) represents all speech sounds.
• Phonology: The study of how sounds function in a particular language — phonemes, allophones, syllable structure, and stress patterns.
• Morphology: The study of word structure — morphemes (smallest meaningful units), affixes, roots, and word formation processes.
• Syntax: The study of sentence structure — how words combine to form phrases and sentences, phrase structure rules, and transformational grammar (Chomsky).
• Semantics: The study of meaning — lexical semantics (word meaning) and compositional semantics (sentence meaning).
• Pragmatics: The study of meaning in context — speech acts, implicature, presupposition, and deixis.

Applied Linguistics

Applied Linguistics applies linguistic theory to practical areas such as: language teaching methodology, second language acquisition, language assessment, translation studies, forensic linguistics, and clinical linguistics (speech therapy).

Noam Chomsky and Universal Grammar

Noam Chomsky proposed that humans are born with an innate language faculty (Universal Grammar), which explains why children acquire language rapidly despite limited input. His theory revolutionized linguistics and cognitive science.
