Past Continuous Tense
Introduction
We use the Past Continuous to talk about actions that were in progress at a specific time in the past.
Formation
Subject + was/were + verb-ing
I was reading. She was sleeping. They were playing.
Negative: I was not (wasn’t) reading.
Question: Were you sleeping?
Uses
1. Action in progress at a specific past time: At 8 pm, I was watching TV.
2. Interrupted action: I was studying when my friend called.
3. Parallel actions: While I was cooking, my mother was cleaning.
Exercises
1. Complete: At 6 pm, I ___ (have) dinner.
2. Make negative: She was sleeping. → ___
3. Ask a question: they / play? → ___
4. Write 3 sentences about what you were doing yesterday at 5 pm.
