Conditional Sentences: Types 1, 2 and 3

Conditional sentences (if-clauses) express a condition and its result. They are used to talk about real or hypothetical situations. There are three main types of conditional sentences in English, each with a different meaning and structure.

Type 1: Real Condition (Present/Future)

Type 1 conditional expresses a real or probable condition in the present or future. Structure: If + present simple, will + base verb. Example: If it rains, I will stay home. This type is used for situations that are likely to happen. The condition is possible and the result is probable. Other modals like ‘can’, ‘may’, ‘might’ can replace ‘will’. Example: If you study hard, you can pass the exam.

Type 2: Unreal Condition (Present/Future)

Type 2 conditional expresses an unreal or hypothetical condition in the present or future. Structure: If + past simple, would + base verb. Example: If I had a million dollars, I would travel around the world. This type is used for imaginary situations that are unlikely or contrary to present facts. The past tense in the if-clause does not refer to past time but to unreality. ‘Were’ is used instead of ‘was’ in formal English. Example: If I were you, I would accept the offer.

Type 3: Unreal Condition (Past)

Type 3 conditional expresses an unreal condition in the past, describing situations that did not happen. Structure: If + past perfect, would have + past participle. Example: If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam. This type is used to express regret or to imagine a different past. It refers to situations that are impossible to change because the time has passed.

Mixed Conditionals

Sometimes we mix types to express complex time relationships: Third conditional if-clause + second conditional result: If I had studied medicine (past), I would be a doctor now (present). Second conditional if-clause + third conditional result: If I were rich (present), I would have bought that house (past).

Other Conditional Connectors

Besides ‘if’, we can use: Unless (= if not), Provided/providing that, As long as, In case, Even if, Whether… or not. Example: Unless you hurry, you will miss the bus. (= If you don’t hurry…)

Exercises

1. Put the verbs in brackets in the correct form: If I (know) the answer, I (tell) you.
2. Rewrite the sentence using Type 3 conditional: He didn’t study, so he failed the exam.
3. Complete: If I had more free time, I … (write 3 possibilities).
