Adjectives and Adverbs: Comparison and Position
Adjectives describe nouns, while adverbs describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. This lesson covers their formation, position, and comparison.
Adjectives
Position: Adjectives usually come before the noun (a beautiful girl) or after linking verbs like be, seem, look, feel (She is beautiful).
Order of adjectives: Opinion, size, age, shape, color, origin, material (a beautiful small old round French wooden table).
Adverbs
Types: Manner (quickly, slowly), Place (here, there), Time (now, yesterday), Frequency (always, never), Degree (very, quite).
Position: Usually after the verb (He runs quickly) or at the beginning/end of a sentence.
Comparison of Adjectives and Adverbs
Comparative: Used to compare two things.
– Short adjectives: adjective + -er (taller, faster).
– Long adjectives: more + adjective (more beautiful).
– Irregular: good/better, bad/worse, far/further.
Superlative: Used to compare three or more things.
– Short adjectives: the + adjective + -est (the tallest).
– Long adjectives: the most + adjective (the most beautiful).
Examples: “Ahmed is taller than Ali.” / “She is the most intelligent student in the class.” / “He runs faster than his brother.”
