Literature: An Introduction to Poetry Analysis

Poetry analysis is an important skill for the BAC exam. This lesson introduces the basic elements of poetry and how to analyze a poem.

Basic Elements of Poetry

Stanza: A group of lines in a poem (couplet = 2 lines, tercet = 3, quatrain = 4, sestet = 6, octave = 8).
Rhyme: The repetition of similar sounds at the end of lines (end rhyme) or within lines (internal rhyme). Rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhyme (ABAB, AABB, etc.).
Rhythm and Meter: The pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. Metre is the organized rhythm.
Imagery: Language that appeals to the five senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell).
Figurative language: Simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, symbol.

How to Analyze a Poem

1. First reading: Read the poem once for general meaning and emotion.
2. Structure: Count stanzas and lines. Identify the rhyme scheme.
3. Speaker and tone: Who is speaking? What is the tone (sad, happy, angry, reflective)?
4. Imagery and language: What images are created? What figurative language is used?
5. Theme: What is the poem about? What message does it convey?

Famous Poets in English Literature

William Shakespeare (sonnets), William Wordsworth (nature), Robert Frost (rural life), Emily Dickinson (introspective), Maya Angelou (civil rights), Langston Hughes (Harlem Renaissance).

Practice Exercise

Exercise: Read a short poem (e.g., Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken”) and answer: What is the rhyme scheme? What is the main theme? Identify one metaphor or simile. What is the tone of the poem?
