Inversion after Negative Adverbials
Inversion reverses subject and verb after negative adverbials at the start of a sentence. Used for emphasis in formal English.
Common Adverbials
- Never, rarely, seldom, hardly ever
- Not only… but also…
- No sooner… than…
- Hardly… when…
- Under no circumstances
Structure
[Negative adverbial] + auxiliary + subject + main verbExamples
- Normal: I have never seen such beauty. → Never have I seen such beauty.
- Normal: She rarely eats meat. → Rarely does she eat meat.
- Normal: No sooner arrived than the phone rang. → No sooner had I arrived than the phone rang.
Exercises
- Rewrite: “I have never been so happy.” → “Never…”
- Rewrite: “She hardly ever complains.” → “Hardly ever…”
- Write 2 inverted sentences with “Not only” and “No sooner”.
