Speaking Skills: Pronunciation and Conversation
Speaking fluently and clearly is essential for effective communication. This lesson covers pronunciation tips and conversation strategies.
Key Pronunciation Elements
- Word stress: Emphasise the correct syllable. PHO-to-graph vs pho-TO-graphy.
- Sentence stress: Emphasise important words: “I LOVE learning ENGLISH.”
- Intonation: Voice goes up for questions, down for statements.
Difficult Sounds for Arabic Speakers
- /θ/ (think) – put tongue between teeth, blow air
- /ð/ (this) – tongue between teeth, use voice
- /ʒ/ (pleasure) – like “zh” sound
- /w/ (well) – round your lips (not /v/)
Improving Fluency
- Practise speaking every day, even for 2 minutes.
- Record yourself and listen back.
- Think in English instead of translating.
- Don’t be afraid of mistakes.
- Shadow native speakers: repeat immediately after hearing.
Exercises
- Record yourself reading a paragraph and identify sounds to improve.
- Speak for 1 minute about your favourite hobby without stopping.
- Practise the /θ/ and /ð/ sounds: “Think about this weather.”
