Expressing Preference: Would Rather, Prefer, Like Better
English has several ways to express preferences. This lesson covers the most common structures.
Prefer + noun/verb-ing
Structure: prefer + noun/verb-ing + to + noun/verb-ing
- I prefer tea to coffee.
- I prefer reading to watching TV.
Would Rather + base verb
Structure: would rather + base verb (+ than + base verb)
- I would rather stay home tonight.
- She would rather study than go out.
- Would you rather have pizza or pasta?
Like + noun/verb-ing + Better
Structure: like + noun/verb-ing + better than + noun/verb-ing
- I like summer better than winter.
- He likes playing football better than watching it.
